Student Email Standards

There is an expanding reliance on electronic communication among students, faculty, staff and administration at Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC).  This is motivated by the convenience, speed, cost-effectiveness, and environmental advantages of using Email rather than printed communication.  All curriculum applicants or curriculum students are provided an FTCC Student Email account hosted by Google (GMail). Student Email is considered an official form of communication between the College and its applicants and students.  Implementation of these procedures ensures that students have access to this critical form of communication. 

***NOTE***: Although name changes are processed through the registrar's office, the name change does not affect a student's username used for logging into email, Blackboard, and/or WebAdvisor.  The student's original username remains the same throughout the student's academic tenure at FTCC (regardless of the name change.) *

College Use of Email

Student Email is an official form of communication within FTCC.  Therefore, the College has the right to send communications to applicants and students via Student Email and the College has a right to expect that those communications will be received and read in a timely manner.


Assignment of Student Email Addresses

Management Information Services (MIS) will assign all students an official FTCC Email address. The College will send official Email communications to this address. To check your Student Email account, you will use a web browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox. 

Student’s Email accounts will be deleted one year after graduation or one year after academic inactivity at FTCC.


Expectations Regarding Student Use of Email

Students are expected to check their official Student Email address on a frequent and consistent basis in order to stay current with FTCC communications. FTCC recommends checking Student Email once a week at a minimum; in recognition that certain communications may be time-sensitive.

Appropriate Use of Student Email

Students should not use their student Email account for personal use.  Student Email is not appropriate for transmitting sensitive or confidential information unless its use for such purposes is matched by an appropriate level of security.   Email shall not be the sole method for notification of any legal action. 

Redirection of Email

A student may have their Student Email electronically redirected to another email address.  If a student wishes to have Email redirected from their official Student Email Address to another Email address (e.g.,,, or an address on a departmental server), they may do so, but at their own risk.  FTCC will not be responsible for the handling of Email by outside vendors.  Having email redirected does not release a student from the responsibilities associated with communications sent to their official student email address.

Educational Uses of Email

Faculty may determine how Student Email will be used in their classes.  It is highly recommended that if faculty have Student Email requirements and expectations, they specify these requirements in their course syllabi.  Faculty may expect that student’s official Email addresses are being accessed, and faculty may use Student Email for their courses accordingly.

The Naming Convention for Your Account is:

  (a) The first seven characters of your last name, the first letter of your first name, and the last four digits of your Student ID number (not your social security number) also called your FTCC Datatel ID.  Your Student ID number can be found on your ID card, your registration statement, or registration mailer.

(Example: Jane P. OnlineStudent, ID #1234567 would be onlinesj4567 ).

  (b)    If your last name is less than seven characters, use your entire last name, the first letter of your first name and the last four digits of your Student ID number.

(Example: Jane P. Doe, ID #1234567 would be doej4567 ).

  (c)    If your last name is hyphenated or contains another special character, do not include the hyphen or special character. (Example: Jane P. Doe-Smith, ID #1234567 would be doesmitj4567 ).

This data is taken directly from the registration records. This will also be the login for your Blackboard, Novell and WebAdvisor accounts.

The format of the initial password for student email accounts has been changed to 8 characters (MMDDYYYY) by Google Apps. If you have submitted a password reset form on or after Tuesday, 3/15/2011 your password will be set to your 8 character date of birth. (Example: March 15, 1980 would be keyed as 03151980). 

After initial login to your Student Email account or Novell network account you will be required to change your password. A suggestion if you want to make all of your passwords the same for Blackboard, Novell network, Student email, and WebAdvisor then make it  6 to 9 characters long with at least 1 letter and 1 number.

Write your new password down and keep it in a secure place so you will remember what you changed it to or can look it up.

You can go to the FTCC homepage,  http//, and find the Student Email connection under the picture on the right or you can go directly to the email page by entering then click the login button, you will see the following Login Screen:



Enter your Username in the first box for Username. (NOTE: You do not need to enter ''.) Enter your password in the second box. First login the password will be your birthdate in MMDDYYYY format, remember it is now 4 digits for the year.

If your login does not work, go back to the previous page and select 'Search' instead of 'Login' or select this link to search for your Username. For the Search, enter your last name only and your seven digit Student ID number. This will display your basic information and will let you know you are in our computer system. If this is correct then you have entered an incorrect password.

If you have forgotten your email password, how do you have it reset? You will need to go back to the previous page and select the 'Password Reset' option. Fill out the the reset email password request form.  Currently there is no way to automate this process.  So it could take until 5pm the next business day as this will only be done during normal business hours of 8am - 5pm Monday - Friday.
